Unfortunately, health insurance is for essentials and cosmetic surgery is not classed as a real health need. In rare instances you can get cosmetic surgery on the NHS. This tends to when the part of your body you want altering is causing you real psychological or physical damage.
You could try to get an operation through your health insurance if your doctor or a specialist will say that it is causing you physical harm and will continue to do so if it isn't treated. For instance, you may find that drooping eyelids are damaging your eyesight or large breasts are twisting your spine and causing serious back problems.
If you feel you've got a good case, do be careful to get everything you need doing pre-approved by your insurer. Gather the evidence from the medical specialists and present it to your insurance company. If your insurer does agree to pay for a procedure make sure it is spelled out clearly in writing and keep a copy.
Your health insurer will only pay for this type of surgery in exceptional circumstances and, on the whole, you should assume that you are not covered. Also, your insurer will not pay for any complications arising from plastic surgery if you've paid to have it done yourself.
